Indignant over the identity of characters in fiction?

I recently read a blog post by  Yassmin Abdel-Magied  on Medium.com titled I walked out of the Brisbane Writers Festival Keynote Address. This is why.  In her post, Yassmin explains that she walked out of the keynote because of the speaker's (Lionel Shriver;  We Need to Talk About Kevin ) permissive view on fiction writers use of characters who have life-experiences/races/creeds different than their own. I wasn't able to find a transcript, but it seems that Shriver was addressing some question as to what fiction writers should be "allowed" to write about, and the controversy over speaking for other cultures. Shriver also made light of students being offended over sombreros at a Mexican themed party (meh).  Miss Abdel-Magied walked out with her head held high in indignation.
