I recently read a blog post by  Yassmin Abdel-Magied  on Medium.com titled I walked out of the Brisbane Writers Festival Keynote Address. This is why.  In her post, Yassmin explains that she walked out of the keynote because of the speaker's (Lionel Shriver;  We Need to Talk About Kevin ) permissive view on fiction writers use of characters who have life-experiences/races/creeds different than their own. I wasn't able to find a transcript, but it seems that Shriver was addressing some question as to what fiction writers should be "allowed" to write about, and the controversy over speaking for other cultures.
